Lawn Care Tips From a Lawn Care Service

99% of the homes out there could use a little lawn care help, here are a few lawn care tips to help you.. Putting effort into your grass is a great inexpensive way to increase the value of your property. A well-manicured lawn is the talk of the neighborhood.

1. Do Not Scalp your Lawn

  • Lawn Care ServicesA lot of people tend to cut their lawn really low so they don’t have to mow so much. This is called scalping your lawn. This is a huge mistake. Scalping or cutting your lawn low causes more lawn care to be needed in the future. Grass that is cut to short does not absorb sunlight through its leaves. This hurts its ability to defend its self against diseases and insects. This also allows for weeds to start growing where they normally wouldn’t.
  • Mow high! A higher cut actually helps you grass grow deeper stronger roots. Never cut off more than 1/3 of your grass height. The remaining grass will develop a great healthy root system. This creates a dense healthy great looking turf.

2. Leave Grass Clippings on Lawn This is a Very Important Lawn Care Tip By Lawn Care services!

  • Grass clippings should not be picked up. Then end up at the soil surface and decompose very quickly. The benefits of these grass clippings are countless! They help to shade the soil which in turns hold moister. The grass clippings revive valuable nutrients that would be lost by removing the grass clippings.
  • A mulching blade is highly recommended to be used. Always keep your mower blade sharpened.

3. Change mowing pattern.

  • Do not mow in the same direction or same pattern each time you mow. By mowing the same direction this weakens your grass. Switch up your cutting direction each time you cut your lawn.

4. Keep Flower Beds to a Minimum

  • Flower beds require a lot of maintenance, edging, weeding trimming pruning. Too many beds scattered throughout the property will begin to look cluttered.
  • Flower beds bordering your house are usually all you need. Remember the more beds the more time you will have to dedicate to keeping up with them.

5. Water deeply, Your Grass need at least 1” of water a week.

  • Watering deeply trains your grass roots to grow deep into the soil. This strengthens your lawn. Deep roots help the grass survive hot dry summer days or dry spells.
  • Water early in the morning to avoid evaporation. Once the sun comes up is will dry top of the lawn. You do not want to ever water at night. Watering at night promotes diseases and mold growth.
  • Over watering wastes money. Over watering is also bad for your grass. Water logged soil is a breeding ground for diseases. Keep your lawn’s watering down to 1” of water a week. A good way of doing this is using a tuna can. Cut the lead off of a tuna can and set it near your sprinklers. When the tuna can is full your grass has gotten enough water.
  • If you have any watering questions please feel free to give Lawn Care Services a call. We will give you advice on proper watering.

February Tips for your St. Augustine Grass Lawn in the Houston Area

Houston St. Augustine Grass

During winter much of Harris County/Houston will most likely experience freezing temperatures this can be hard on our native Houston St. Augustine. Most people will receive frost on their St. Augustine grass lawns. Cold weather and wind will cause stress on your Houston St. Augustine grass. February in Texas is a great time to start preparing  for the healthy, vigorous lawn you want for spring and summer.

Signs that you have had winter stress on your Houston St. Augustine grass

St. Augustine grass

Signs that you have had winter stress on your St. Augustine grass your grass changing or fading into different shades of dark colors then turning black and eventually brown. This does not mean your grass is actually dead. Your lawn will bounce back when warm water returns. The new growth will replace the yellowed and brown grass currently in your lawn.

The crabgrass in your lawn will turn brown but it has not died off. When the warmth of summer returns the crabgrass will return also. Areas that are mostly crabgrass now are a great time to consider planting grass plugs, Houston St. Augustine grass runners. Before planting new sod in these areas it is very important to remove the crabgrass. This can be done by digging 6-8” into the ground and removing the roots of the crabgrass. If you have a compost pile these make great additions to your compost pile.

The thicker you grow your St. Augustine grass.

The thicker you grow your St. Augustine grass the better it is. Your current grass can choke out the invading crabgrass. One way to thicken your St. Augustine grass is by not cutting lower than 3”. This promotes a thicker more healthy lawn that naturally chokes invading weeds.

Towards the end of February is the time to start fertilizing your Houston lawn. We recommend you to use a slow release granular fertilizer. The helps to begin growing a nice green healthy lawn. This gives you a great start for summer and spring. You can apply a weed/grass feeder to help control those bothersome weeds.

Do not wait until it is to late to use these. If the temperature is above 80 degrees then you can burn or even kill your St. Augustine grass. Make sure to read the instructions on the fertilizer. This will prevent you from accidentally hurting your lawn. If you have weeds spread out you can spot treat to kill these weeds. We recommend that you pull the weeds up whenever possible.

These are helpful tips to help you ensure that you have the best out of your lawn. Don’t forget that Spring is right around the corner, begin now and you will ensure a strong healthy St. Augustine grass to be proud of. Taking care of your lawn now will give you a great lawn for the hot summer months.

Spring Lawn Care Tips, Tips to Help Ensure you Have the Lawn of you Want!

Spring starts everything to grow. Winter is over and your yard is coming back alive! Here are a couple of Houston Spring lawn care tips to help you get your lawn back into tip top shape.

Houston Spring lawn care starts now, your grass will start to come out of its doormat state, you should check for common lawn problems, such as dead spots, grubs, and insects. The most important part of a healthy lawn is proper year round lawn care. (We call this year round lawn love) by taking care of your lawn year round you build a stronger healthier lawn. Let’s start this Spring off with great Spring lawn care practices. Spring lawn maintenance is very important for the health and beauty of your lawn in the upcoming year.

Spring is a great time to seed your lawn. By over seeding your lawn you are replacing grass that was weakened over the winter or dormant time. This will give you fresh grass in your lawn. You want to make sure that you do a few things to prepare your lawn.

Lawn Aeration:

Lawn Aeration Service is the process of taking small plugs out of your lawn to allow water to get down into the roots, along with air. This process loosens up the soil of your lawn. This helps you to control thatch buildup. By aerating twice a year you will help your lawn to grow health and strong. A strong lawn is a beautiful lawn that you and your family will enjoy for years to come!

Watering:

Watering your lawn is so important. A lot of times this is the one thing that is overlooked by homeowners and other lawn care professionals.

Your lawn requires one inch of water a week. Do not flood your lawn. A slow watering is the best way to water your lawn. A sprinkler that allows you to control where you are watering will help you to properly water your lawn. A great way to tell when you have watered enough is to use a tuna can. Lay a tuna can where it will collect falling water. Once the can is full you move your sprinkler to another part of your lawn. This ensures that you have properly watered your lawn.

Grass Clippings:

A lot of people rake up their grass clippings or bag them. This is a waste of great natural fertilizer. When you cut your lawn use a mulching blade and a mulching kit for your mower.  Your grass clippings will naturally fertilize your lawn. This is known as grass cycling.

Weed Treatment:

Treating weeds naturally is the best way to treat unwanted growth, by pulling them up. Pesticides and weed killers just polite and harm the ground over time. When you see a weed or plant growing that you do not want on your property pull it up. This stops it from spreading.

Sometimes you will get weeds from property near you.  Some weeds spread their seeds from through the air. Once a week pulling these weeds up will help to control them. This is a very good Spring lawn care practice.

Lawn Aeration by Lawn Care Service Equals a More Healthy, Beautiful Lawn

 Houston Aeration

Lawn Aeration can save up to 50% of your watering bill. This helps to not only save you water lose but keeps your lawn looking beautiful!

Having your lawn professionally aerated is an important part of virtuous lawn care. It can help to keep a beautiful, carpet like, and attractive lawn. Your lawn can be the showcase of the neighborhood. Aeration is beneficial for you as well as your lawn.

Houston Lawn Aeration

What is lawn Aeration?

Aeration is the removal of small round cores of soil to allow air, fertilizer and moisture to the roots of your lawn; this allows your lawn to breath. By removing these cores, it prevents rain water runoff. Instead of the rain water running off your lawn, it soaks into the root zones of your grass.

How do you Perform a Lawn Aeration?

We have specially designed lawn aeration tools; this equipment has rotary wheels on it. These wheels have hollow spikes. When these spikes are rolled across your lawn they remove a plug. Lawn aeration sounds like it looks bad after done but the fact is it is the most healthiest one thing you can do for your lawn. Our equipment is top of the line and gives an even uniformed consistency across your lawn. our aerators are no bigger than the average lawnmower.

How Aeration helps your lawn.

The removal of small plugs has many benefits. It allows water, fertilizer and air to reach the root zone of your grass. Your grass will get all the benefits and nutrients it has been lacking. Your grass will be healthier, thicker thus giving you a more beautiful lawn.

Aeration helps to prevent soil compaction. If your soil is compacted your grass is unable to grow. This is generally a problem in high traffic areas and new subdivisions.

Aeration saves water use, because the water needed to water your lawn in cut in half. This allows fertilizer and air to get to the roots of your grass. Another really important benefit of aerating is the promotion of micro-organisms in your grass. This will also help with thatch build up.

When to do Lawn Aeration:

  1. If your soil is compacted.
  2. To remove thatch problems.
  3. Hard clay or gumbo soil.
  4. High traffic areas.
  5. If you have had to start watering more often.

Fixes for soil being compacted

Diseases, insects, lack of fertilizer and diseases are blamed for lawn issues, when the real problem is your soil is compacted. Lawn aeration is the best way to fix this issue. Aeration will loosen up your soil allowing your grass roots to receive the proper amount of air, water and fertilizer. By your lawn receiving the proper air, water and uncompacted soil, you will have a lush healthy green lawn.

Soil Compaction

Compacted soil has higher density then none compacted soil. There are several ways to test to see if your soil is compacted. One good indicator is, do you have any trails in your lawn from your kids or animals walking on the same spot over and over. The trails are a sign that your soil is compacted. Another way is to push the end of a fork into your soil in several areas. If some parts are harder to push the fork in then your soil is compacted.

Your grass is unable to grow properly in compacted soil. Grass that is in compacted soil grows slowly, becomes thin, lacks vigor, becomes thin or doesn’t grow at all. Proper lawn aeration twice a year will keep your soil in top shape. In the long run it will save you money on your water bill and on fertilizing.

Maintaining Healthy St. Augustine Grass

St. Augustine grass should be cut a 3.5” height minimum. But you should never cut more than one-third of the height of your grass off at a time. An example is if you think it is time to cut your lawn but you are not sure, look at your grass, and make sure that it is higher than two inches. Remember never to cut St. Augustine lower than two inches.

Maintaining Healthy Houston St. Augustine Grass

What kind of mower to use.

St. Augustine grass lawns should be cut at a height of two to three inches. A rotary mower will do a good job if you have a smooth lawn. You must keep your blade sharp. We have found that keeping St. Augustine at least three inches in shady yards/areas this will help to keep the grass growing in those areas.

Don’t let St. Augustine grass get much higher than three inches

Try not to allow your St. Augustine grass to get much higher than three inches. If you let your St. Augustine grass get much taller than three inches you will mow down the stems that have grown. This will cause your grass to look diseased, when it is not.

How to measure your mower height

The easiest and most accurate way to measure your cutting height on your mower is by placing your mower on a flat surface and taking notice of the height from the blade to the surface. There is no need to get it exact. Just eye it. Make sure that all four of your wheels are set to the same setting. Keep in mind when doing this that your mower cannot be running. Placing your hands into an engine is very careful. If you are not comfortable or believe this is above your technical expertise then please have your local lawn repair shop help you.

A sharp blade is very important

A sharp mower blade is very important! Depending on how often you mow determines how often you should have your blade sharpened. Dull mower blades do not cut the grass but breaks or whips them off. The turn ends left by a dull blade will cause your lawn to look yellowish and sick. Torn grass blades leads to more water use by the grass along with a major increase in disease.

houston St. Augustine

What to do in Fall

In Fall your grass will stop growing. During this time you should not mow it over and over. During the winter your grass will have a nice brown color. Mid-March you can mow the top brown blades. This exposes the soil to the sun and allows it to warm. Be careful not to scalp your lawn. This will hurt your lawn in spring when it comes out of being dormant.

Should I bag or catch my clippings?

There is no reason to bag or catch your grass clippings. In fact you are taking away natural fertilizer. Letting grass clippings fall to the ground does not cause thatch buildup or diseases. We use and recommend everybody to use a mulching kit and blade when mowing. This will return natural nitrogen to your soil. This in turns keeps you soil very healthy.

St. Augustine grass

Does Houston St. Augustine suffer from thatch build up

St. Augustine usually does not ever form a thatch layer. By mowing properly and regular you are keeping St. Augustine grass very healthy. Do not use a De-thatcher or allow anybody to use one on your lawn. Deep watering will help to keep your lawn at its peak. This keeps the roots growing very deeply.

If you follow the above tips, your St. Augustine grass will be healthy and green for the upcoming years! Join our Lawn Care Facebook Group for more tips on Houston St. Augustine Grass.
